Disease prevention strategies, which have become a priority in response to the rise of chronic non-communicable diseases and health crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, are crucial for improving quality of life and limiting the impact of these conditions. Prevention undeniably offers benefits both at the individual level—by improving the health of people and animals and reducing comorbidities—and at the level of healthcare systems, by decreasing severe complications and hospitalizations. It also benefits the environment by limiting transmission and reducing the use of medications. This highlights the urgent need to develop new preventive and alternative approaches in human and animal health.
As part of this Strategic Activity Domain (SAD) for Atlanpole Biotherapies, the focus will be on actions and projects related to the prevention of both communicable diseases (viral, bacterial, parasitic) andnon-communicable diseases(cardiovascular, metabolic, chronic respiratory diseases, cancers). The key topics to be addressed will include:
- The development of alternatives to antibiotics to combat antimicrobial resistance;
- The creation of prophylactic measures (vaccines for humans or animals) to prevent emerging infections, zoonoses, and health crises;
- The design of new foods for special medical purposes;
- The development of innovative strategies to modulate the gut microbiota;
- The implementation of new approaches to therapeutic education.
ACTIONS OF THE CLUSTER
In a context where health crises are becoming more frequent, non-communicable chronic diseases are on the rise, and healthcare systems are struggling to keep up, the cluster aims to support and accelerate innovation in prevention among companies, healthcare institutions, and health-related industries.
Atlanpole Biotherapies contributes to the advancement of prevention and promotes a ONE HEALTH approach at the national level through concrete actions across the Pays de la Loire, Brittany, and Centre-Val de Loire regions, including:
Support and Guidance for Innovation Projects
As an expert in collaborative projects, the cluster offers its members a comprehensive support and engineering program to help identify partners and secure funding opportunities.
Since the creation of this Strategic Activity Domain (SAD) in 2023, 10 prevention-focused projects have been supported by the cluster.
+ 15 projects related to prevention were awarded the cluster label during Phase IV of the competitiveness clusters 2019–2022

Strategic Partnerships
To enable collaborative research, the cluster has established strategic partnerships since its inception with:
- Innovation support players: French health competitiveness clusters (Medicen, BioValley France, Eurobiomed, Lyonbiopôle), other regional competitiveness clusters (Valorial, Vegepolys Valley, Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique), clusters (Polepharma, Biotech Santé Bretagne) and other innovation support organizations (technopoles, CEA Tech)
- Academic actors: research laboratories and institutes, technological research institutes (Inserm, INRAE), engineering schools, training organizations (Oniris)…
- Thematic networks such as MibioGate (Study of Biological Barriers and their Microbiota in the Development of Chronic Diseases project).
These partnerships foster public-private cooperation to drive innovation between the cluster’s SME members and all stakeholders engaged in disease prevention and the One Health approach!
Event Organization
Workshop, journée “Nutrition & Microbiote”, webinars, participation in NutrEvent and SPACE… The cluster creates numerous events to bring together its members around the strategic focus on “Disease Prevention” in order to foster networking and discuss key topics in this field.
Atlanpole Biotherapies organizes and co-organizes more than 30 events per year!
