The Université de Tours, created in 1970 through the merger of existing faculties and university colleges, is the heir to a long-standing tradition of education dating back to the Gallo-Roman era. Its origins include early medical academies in Antiquity, medieval schools of medicine and rhetoric, and a 19th-century medical school established under the influence of Pierre Bretonneau.
Formally structured in its modern form after World War II and shaped by the 1968 higher education reform, the university has since expanded across disciplines and campuses, notably in Blois and Chinon. Today, it is a multidisciplinary institution that continues to grow through the development of faculties, institutes, and engineering schools, supporting both education and research across a wide range of fields.
